Throughout the year Scotland plays host to major sporting and cultural events attracting interest from a worldwide audience – following are some of the important dates:

 

*  2–7 May 2013 *  Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, Moray
This event reflects the rich heritage of whisky making in the north-east of Scotland with a varied programme of whisky-related events.

*  19–30 June 2013 *  International Film Festival Edinburgh
Described as "like Cannes - only civilised"! The EIFF has emerged as one of the biggest highlights of the year for the European film industry and it features many national and international premičres. It also attracts worldwide stars with past red carpet appearances by the likes of Sean Connery and Keira Knightley.

*  20–23 June 2013 *  Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh
This is the spectacular highlight of Scotland’s country calendar with demonstrations and displays including pedigree livestock, craft fairs, Scottish food exhibition and tastings, sheep-shearing competitions, dancing JCB’s and much more.

*  26–30 June 2013 *  Glasgow International Jazz Festival
The Festival attracts a wide range of international names in the jazz world over a nine day period for a range of formal concerts and informal gigs.

*  18–21 July 2013 *  Muirfield Golf Course, Gullane, East Lothian, The British Open Golf Championship
The 142nd British Open Golf Championship will be held at Muirfield Golf Course, Gullane, only an hour from Edinburgh. This will be the 16th time Muirfield Golf Course has hosted the British Open, the last being in 2002, when Ernie Els won a four-man play-off.

*  19–28 July 2013 *  Edinburgh International Jazz & Blues Festival
The city comes to life with the smooth sounds of jazz as performers from around the world hit town. From big name stars to hot new talent, you’ll find something here to get your toes tapping!

*  2–24 August 2013 *  Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh
Acclaimed by many as the greatest show on earth and undeniably one of the world’s most breathtaking spectacles, the nightly performance of the Tattoo on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade is a dazzling and compelling celebration of music, dance and drama.

*  2–26 August 2013 *  Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh
The Edinburgh Fringe is unique, breaking it own record every year as the largest arts festival on the planet! Each year it brings thousands of performances from all over the world in nearly 200 venues across Scotland’s capital city.

*  9 August–1 September 2013 *  Edinburgh International Festival
A sizzling three weeks of the very best opera, theatre, music and dance in one of Europe’s premier arts festivals.

*  10–26 Aug 2013 *  Edinburgh International Book Festival
This is the festivals 31st year of bringing high-profile authors to Edinburgh. Each year they welcome thousands of visitors to its events, confirming Edinburgh’s widely acknowledged place on the literary map of Britain.

*  17-18 August 2013 *  World Pipe Band Championships, Glasgow
Expect exciting competition across all Grades, in the fiercely contested Drum Major contest as well as Highland Dancing and Highland Games Championships! Enjoy a fantastic weekend event.

*  7 September 2013 *  Braemar Highland Gathering, Aberdeenshire
The most well-known of the Highland Games Events in Scotland attended by the Queen and the Royal Family, whose holiday home is at nearby Balmoral.

*  26–29 Sept 2013 *  Dunhill Links Golf Championship, St Andrews
A truly international championship, this pro-am tournament is a celebration of Links golf and is one of the most prestigious events on the European tour.

*  October 2013 *  Enchanted Forest, Perthshire
A multi-award winning outdoor sound and light show developed to showcase the stunning Autumn woodland setting of Faskally Wood in Highland Perthshire. A perfect excuse to visit the Perthshire area and admire the beautiful Autumn colours during the day and experience a night-time light show which is out of this world!

*  Throughout December 2013 *  Winter Wonderland, Edinburgh
One of Europe's finest Christmas festivals returns with a month-long programme bringing warmth and festive cheer to Edinburgh as the city transforms itself into a magical winter wonderland centered around the world-renowned Princes Street Gardens.

*  31 December 2013 *  Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Party, Edinburgh
Gather beneath the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and bring in 2014 in true Scottish style at the largest new-year party in the world! Plan ahead for 2014!

*  23 July–3 August *  2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow
Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games promises to stage 11 days of elite sporting competition, live entertainment and cultural highlights. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be a celebration of culture and national pride, be there and enjoy the spectacle of these great events.

*  26–29 September 2014 *  The Ryder Cup, Gleneagles
In 2014, Gleneagles will be the setting for The Ryder Cup, one of the biggest sporting events in the world. It will be the first time in more than 40 years that the tournament has been staged in Scotland, the home of golf and preparations are well underway to ensure that Scotland stages the best Ryder Cup yet.

Scotland welcomes the world for the Year of Homecoming 2014! The year-long programme of events will celebrate the best of Scotland’s food and drink, active and natural resources, creativity, culture and ancestral heritage.
